Augustus F. Kinzel, MD, has been Named a Professional of the Year in Psychiatry

Dr. Kinzel’s recent manuscript, "Person Theory: Toward a New Developmental Paradigm for the Origin, Nature, and Disorder of the Mind" written with Dr. Ahron L. Friedberg, will soon be published by International Psychoanalytic Books

CANAAN, NY, October 23, 2014, Augustus F. Kinzel, MD, has been named a Worldwide Branding Professional of the Year in Psychiatry. While inclusion in Worldwide Branding is an honor, only small selections of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Branding membership.

Dr. Kinzel has been writing about mental health issues since 1970. His topics have included personal space in violent prisoners, the precipitants of violent behavior, normal multi-tracked unconscious personal development, psychodynamic disorders of unconscious aggression that hold back personal development, and the origin of the mind in the universe.

In addition to a career in inpatient and outpatient general psychiatry and psychoanalysis, Dr. Kinzel practiced forensic psychiatry and geropsychiatry. Ultimately his interest was in the effective treatment of those with emotional problems and mental illness to better understand the normal nature of man through resolving his abnormal states that enabled his normal nature to re-appear. He attributes his success to his ability to accurately diagnose and treat patients effectively and rapidly, and at the same time see patterns that permitted him to formulate new concepts of normal personal development phases and their psychodynamic disorders. The highlight of his career was the unexpected extent of improvement he was able to get in his patients with a variety of psychiatric disorders using psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

Dr. Kinzel holds a Certificate in Psychoanalysis from Columbia University, an MD from The University of Pennsylvania, and a B.A. from Yale University, where he graduated Magna cum laude. He completed his residency in psychiatry at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital-New York State Psychiatric Institute after an Internship in medicine at the Boston Medical Center (Tufts University). He is Board certified in Psychiatry and maintains an affiliation with the Western Massachusetts and Albany Association for Psychoanalytic Psychology.

During medical training at The University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Kinzel assisted in research on arterial and capillary blood gas comparison at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, CA. He also assisted in research on the effect of cholera toxin on sodium transport in frog skin at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit No.2 in Taipei, Taiwan. He was also president of the student Strecker Psychiatric Society.

After completing his medical training, Dr. Kinzel served in the U.S. Public Health Service at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, MO where he diagnosed and treated the most dangerous mentally ill prisoners in the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. There, he also did research that showed the personal space (body-buffer zone) in violent prisoners to be four times larger than in non-violent prisoners. His research became internationally recognized and was replicated by another group. He also taught psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons while he had an analytic psychotherapy practice for 10 years in New York City.

Dr. Kinzel then went back into in-patient psychiatry and became a psychiatrist-in-charge at McLean Hospital in Belmnot, MA and then medical director of psychiatric general hospital inpatient units in Brunswick, ME, Muskegon, MI, Williamsport, PA, and Johnstown, PA. As the result of inspiring teachers and a liberating training psychoanalysis, he is blessed with a daily creative state where he’s developing concepts that hopefully will contribute significantly to understanding and helping man and his psychiatric disorders, especially those of aggression. Dr. Kinzel has testified many times in criminal court on competence to stand trial and legal insanity.

Recognized for his contributions in treating schizophrenia, Dr. Kinzel was honored with the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness in 1993 for improvement in those who were treatment resistant at the Assertive Community Treatment Program in Muskegon, MI.

Dr. Kinzel looks forward to promoting his most recent book, "Person Theory: Toward a New Developmental Paradigm for the Origin, Nature, and Disorder of the Mind" written with Dr. Ahron L. Friedberg, soon to be published by International Psychoanalytic Books. The work describes a theory of normal unconscious multi-track personal development, the psychodynamic disorders of unconscious destructive intent that hold back personal development, the slow emergence of personal development track phases that collectively caused civilization stages starting with the Hunter-gatherer stage, and the matter wave evolution in which unconsciousness and consciousness mind matter waves gave rise to survival cell life, then adaptive plant/animal life, and then civilizing person ethnic, cultural, and benevolent life.

Dr. Kinzel is retired but continues to write up to six hours a day at his home in Vero Beach, FL.
