James T. McDonald Recognized for Excellence in Science Education

Professor McDonald, Ph.D., instructs future teachers at Central Michigan University

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI, October 23, 2014, James McDonald, Ph.D., Professor of Science Education and Director of the GEMS Education Center of Central Michigan University, has been recognized by Worldwide Branding for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in his profession.

With 28 years of industry experience, Dr. McDonald has expertise in teacher preparation in science education His duties in his current role of 28 years are working as a professor of science education, developing the next generation of teachers, teaching graduate classes in instruction, curriculum, educational psychology, assessment and evaluation, and developing his own syllabi and science methods for elementary and middle level pre-service teachers.

Dr. McDonald's dissertation was titled, “Learning Science in Small Groups: The Relationship of Conversation to Conceptual Understanding.” He was an elementary and middle school teacher for 10 years, teaching last at Monte Gardens Elementary in Concord, Calif. He was certified by the state of California.

In the future, Dr. McDonald would like to stay active in national organizations. He attributes his success to great mentors in the science education field, specifically professionals from Purdue and Harvard. He had earned a Ph.D. in science education from Purdue University (2002), a Master of Science in Education from California State University, East Bay (1995), a Master of Divinity in Pastoral Ministry from the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary (1981), and a bachelor’s degree in sociology and religion from St. Olaf College (1977).

Dr. McDonald became involved in education and teaching after graduating from the seminary, and realized that he liked working with children. He was working in a sales job and had clients that were educators and worked in special education in the town in which he lived. They knew his background and recommended that he try the education field.
