Matthew Ong Named Professional of the Year in Finance Management

SINGAPORE, March 3, 2015, Matthew Ong, Finance Director of the ASEAN Division of Essilor Singapore, has been named a Worldwide Branding Professional of the Year in Finance Management. While inclusion in Worldwide Branding is an honor, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Branding membership.

 Mr. Ong brings 19 years of professional experience to his role as a finance director of the ASEAN region at Essilor Singapore. In this position, he has become well-known for his skills in business partnering and finance management. On a daily basis, he is responsible for overseeing all financial operations for the ASEAN region, which also involves managing directors in Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. Prior to his role with Essilor Singapore, Mr. Ong worked with GE for almost two decades in various roles, including commercial operations manager for GE Health Care, chief financial officer for GE Capital and financial planning and analysis manager for CE Lighting.

Looking back, Mr. Ong attributes his success to keeping an open mind, as well as being adaptable to change. He makes changes to his plans when necessary. He became involved in his profession by chance. He studied economics in school. He started in the industry as an accountant and progressed from there.

Mr. Ong received a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Management from the University of London, where he graduated with Second-Class Upper Honors in 1989, and he also earned a diploma in business administration from Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 1986. In addition to his degrees, he is a master black belt through Lean Six Sigma, and he has completed various training courses in creative leasing, leadership communication skills, goal setting, delegating and breakthrough leadership. In 2011, he received an Ultrasound Award for Rigor through GE Asia Pacific, having also received a President Award for Operations, Excellence and Rigor through GE Asia Pacific in 2010. Additional awards to his credit include a President Silver Award for Project Gold Finger, a President Silver Award for Inclusiveness, a President Platinum Award for Overall Outstanding Performance, a President Management Award for Outstanding Collection, and a President Management Award for Outstanding Expertise, all through GE ASEAN. In years to come, Mr. Ong intends to bring the company back to the basics and prepare them for the next level of growth.
